Father Brown

I spent the last week or so re-reading all of G.K. Chesterton’s Father Brown stories. For those who aren’t familiar, Father Brown is a small, round, mild, dull-looking priest—whose dull face hides keen powers of observation and a deep understanding of human nature, much of drawn from his many years of service in the confessional. (No, he doesn’t talk about his penitent’s confessions.)

The stories are good fun, if a little goofy, and most of them have a point; and it’s fun to revisit them once in a while.

  1. Ah, yes. Father Brown.

Someday, I intend to find the video-dramatization of that series. (Starring Alec Guinness…)

I enjoyed the series deeply last time I read it.

  2. Alec Guinness!

Did a little searching. There’s a 1974 TV series, which does NOT star Alec Guinness, and a 1954 movie, which does. The movie was released in the U.S. as _The Detective_.

  3. More searching. The 1974 series is available on Netflix and on Amazon Instant Video (where it’s rather pricey). The movie with Alec Guiness is available from Amazon as a VHS tape and as a PAL-format DVD (so much for that).
