It’s Been A Bad Week

Let’s see.

I understand that the Senate has passed the truly asinine and pork-laden stimulus package despite its evident unpopularity to the citizenry at large. I don’t have a link for that, but I doubt you need one.

What you might not know is that the bill contains a scary Health Care provision that will give the Federal Government a right to determine what kind of care is appropriate for you to receive.

Thanks to an asinine new rule from the CPSC, a true tribute to the Law of Unintended Consequences, small used bookstores are having to dispose of large quantities of children’s books published prior to 1985: books that are no practical threat to anybody. 1984, anyone? (Hat tip to Michael Cleverly.)

Things are bad all over, though. In England, a foster mother will no longer be allowed to provide foster care, since one of her charges chose (of her own free will, so far as I can tell) to convert from Islam to Christianity.

I could go on; but all I can say is, I’m glad I don’t put my faith in princes.

  1. Yes, the health provisions suck but it’s also the perfect reason for people to become more active in *preventative* health care, nutrition and alternative methods… 🙂

  2. I would like to see a link to the “pork” that the stimulus bill is so laden with. It disappoints me when people use generalized, emotionally-charged words to refer to something that is “well known.” I find a lot of these statements are just propoganda.

I, myself, have not taken time to review the details of the stimulus package and cannot therefore, refute, but I would like to hear the evidence if what you are saying is true. And, of course, if you have better ideas, it would be good to hear them, too.

    Thanks.

  3. Thadeus,

Like almost everyone else I’m relying on secondary reports; take a look at Instapundit for examples. I didn’t include any links because I was expressing a general feeling of dismay.

Now that you mention it, though, I’ll point out that given the (reportedly) massive size of the bill, I suspect that tolerably few people have actually read the whole thing–and we have, in fact, been given remarkably little time to do so. It’s been less than a month since Obama’s inauguration, and we’re being asked to swallow something on the order of $800 billion dollars? That’s change I can count on leaving my pocket.
