Inconceivable!

There’s a delightful scene in The Princess Bride where Inigo Montoya and Westley are dueling at the top of the Cliffs of Madness (or whatever the heck they were called) and they are tossing the names of great masters of the sword back and forth.

I assumed that William Goldman made it all up, but it turns out that all of the masters they named were real people. Tenser, Said the Tensor has the scoop (and links to some of their writings).

  1. I thought the best part of the gag was that they were real. Granted, I only recognized two of the names (“…unless he has studied his Agrippa. Which I have!”), but assumed the rest were, as well, or what would be the point?

  2. “Cliffs of Insanity.” Right.

Oh, well. I had four kids romping about my comfy chair as I was writing that; I plead distraction. Plus, the floor between me and the bookcase (the relevant bookcase) was covered with sharp little Lego pieces.
