  1. Well, I think he’s got hold of something. My judgement is that whenever the script innovates, it diminishes; attributing this to scriptwriting conventions may well be accurate. Consider also the way the scenarists prematurely show us the mount of the Winged Nazgul at Osgiliath; Tolkien very patiently builds to the moment when he finally shows us the monster in the confrontation with Eowyn, and it has great effect. The scenarists are in a hurry to show it to us, and the scene at the battle is diminished accordingly.
